| It was an exciting and hot week (week of Sept. 23rd)! You may have heard that we had a tent set up in the classroom. The tent went along nicely with our story this week, Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night. Children did ask to spend the night but they mostly did their reading in it. It was a nice addition to the class for the week. We also were busy with some Johnny Appleseed activities. We graphed, compared, and used our senses to describe apples. And yes, that included tasting them. |
Thank you to all the children who shared apples with those who didn't bring one in on Monday. It was so nice to see such kindness in such little people! On Tuesday, a retired teacher friend came in and helped with the apple peeling for the apple sauce. After about 15 minutes in my Instant Pot, it was ready. It was transferred into a crock pot until we were ready to try it out. I am so please that some children who had never tried homemade apple sauce were willing to give it a taste - and most liked it and wanted a serving! I have to say, it tasted really good.
On Tuesday, students also had the opportunity to work with another second grade teacher doing an activity having to do with Johnny Appleseed. After surveying them, all wanted to do it again at some point.
Character traits was our main focus in reading this week. We discussed how characters can be described by how they look, but it is how they act, think and talk that make up their personality. We will continue to discuss this throughout the year.
Finally on Friday, we got all 1st and 2nd graders together to discuss our reading intervention time that begins on Monday. Each student has been place with a teacher based on need. Children will work with their group 4 days a week for a 45 minute block. The groups are flexible and children will move into different groups to meet their needs.
Well, because I forgot to post last weeks newsletter, you will now have 2 at once! We started October with more nice weather. Can't complain about that.

This week we had many firsts:
- We met with our K Reading Buddies. Students interviewed each other to learn more about their buddy.
- We began our Intervention block in the mornings. Children are in flexible groups between 1st and 2nd grade classrooms working on reading skills based on what they need. This happens 4x a week for 45 minutes.
- We also started SLAM - Students Learning About Math. Many were part of this last year. This happens 2x a week and the flexible groupings are formed using pretests to determine what targets students need to work on to become proficient.
- To end our week, the children made cactus rock gardens. It tied in with our story A Walk in the Desert. They will be on display in the classroom during conferences.
